This historical fiction, set in 1855, tells the story of settlers in the Kansas Territory. The main character is a 13 year-old who moves with her family to Kansas to open a store. It desribes the struggle between pro-slavery and free state settlers. I enjoyed it, and learned something about Kansas. It is written for older elementary and middle school-aged children. The way it was written was good and easy to follow for the age group. The clips at the beginning of the chapters is a nice interesting touch.

I found a couple of spots where a word was missing, but other than that, it was good reading. It was good to hear of the struggles that new states had around the slavery issue. I could picture so much of the story in my head; well written.
