Courte biographie
Patricia Anne Klein Ernst was born on July 1, 1927 in San Fernando, California, the daughter of Gladys Gable and Roy Oliver Ernst. Her mother enrolled her in the famous Meglin Kiddies school, but she recorded only two of her songs professionally for one demo tape. She studied at California State University, Los Angeles, were she worked as secretary to the General Manager of Associated Students by the California State College. In 21 December 1946, she married Marvin Owen Brisco and moved to Arizona, they had two sons: Michael Arvie and David Roy. By 1961, the marriage had ended in divorce.

Focused on her writing career, she returned to California, where she met the writer Clayton Matthews in a local writers' group. After Matthews divorced his first wife, he and Patricia married in 3 November 1972 and lived near San Diego. She started to write poetry, juvenile books, a play, fantasy and mystery short stories, which she signed under different names: Patricia Ernst, P.A. Brisco and Pat A. Brisco. Using the names Patty Brisco and Pat Brisco, she wrote gothic novels. When the market for gothic novels softened, at the suggestion of her husband agent, Jay Garon, she began to write romance novels under her second married name, Patricia Matthews. She and her husband also collaborated on several romance and suspense novels using the pseudonyms Laura Wylie and Laurie Wylie. She and her husband wrote five Casey Farrell mystery novels together, and she wrote three on her own, the Thumbprint Mysteries, set in the American Southwest. With Denise Hrivnak, she also wrote under the pseudonym Denise Matthews.

Her husband Clayton died in 25 March 2004. Patricia died on December 7, 2006 in the Brisco family home in Prescott, Arizona.

When I first started reading this, I was really looking forward to a good story. I couldn't have been more wrong! The whole book was so ridiculous from start to...I would say finish except that I didn't finish this one. I found I didn't care a damn about Julie/SueEllen, whoever the hell she was.

To be fair, though, I shouldn't say "from start.." either, as it did start out okay, but it was like skiing down a mountain after that, downhill all the way.

the protagonist had a bad habit of walking (I should say running) away from anyone who cared about her. She was in a situation where she wasn't sure who to trust, but she took that to paranoia heights, as she turned from everyone who wanted to help her. And because of her stupidity, instead of sympathy for her plight, I found myself thinking, "Who cares?"

And the story of her evil twin sister who was having an affair with their father (UGH!) was just plain gross! That's when I started skipping rather than reading through, because who wants to read that!!

Lack of morals must run in that family, as Julie cheats on Ken, the guy she's engaged to, with a guy named, Shell, whom she just met. It was soon obvious he really cared for her ( doesn't say much for his common sense), bus she isn't sure if she cares for him or if she's just needing comfort. Why in the hell did she sleep with him so soon and cheat on the guy she's supposed to love? If that's not bad enough, she suspects Shell of plotting against her, runs away from him (and everyone else she doesn't trust, she takes paranoia to a new level), rejects him when he follows her because he was so worried (even less common sense than I thought), runs off yet again, meets another guy and jumps into bed with him! When this new guy falls for her (how could they all fall for her "charms" when she's not at all charming), she leads him on, even though she doesn't return his feelings, because he can be of use to her.

She sure flunked Morals 101! At least her sister was faithful to Daddy! (sorry, couldn't help myself there).

The second part of the book focuses on her evil sister, and I actually found myself rooting for her, I disliked whatshername so much. Since I stopped reading I don't know how the book ended, but I hope it was with her funeral....with evil sister dancing on her coffin.
