This is the first part of a two-part autobiography by the longtime editor of The New Statesman, and more or less discusses the influences on him growing up. I didn't find this quite as interesting as the second part, which covers the period of his editorship, but there is a fair amount of interest in the portraits he draws, particularly of his father.

Autobiographical musings by the long-time editor of the New Statesman and Nation, with an emphasis on his experiences in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Some of it is quite interesting -- I enjoyed the references to Sir David Low, the great cartoonist, and there are some funny illustrations by Low in the book -- but I do get the sometimes uncanny feeling that Martin is wiggling a bit over his treatment of Russia, and tries a bit too hard to justify himself over his actions in the 30s.
