A good survey of the Royal Navy from its beginnings under Alfred the Great. While now replaced by more recet works, this is still a useful tool for the researcher. It is entertaining enough for the general reader.

1759 was to quote "Heart of Oak" another of the victories that made 1759 "This wonderful Year". The "ifs" are very far reaching. Without the defeat of the French main battle fleet off the Brittany coast, then the French could have sent a fleet to aid Montcalm at Quebec, no English Canada, and thus, no Justin Bieber. Mr. Marcus created a clear narrative in readable prose. It is a good campaign book showing the value of command of the sea. Sadly, there has not been a reprint of this book, and that is a loss.… (plus d'informations)

The book contains a lot of detailed information and gives you a rather good view on the state of the recent research. However it does not add that much new reasoning maybe with the exception of how long the Grenland settlements actually lasted. Not bad as a reference book.

Quite simply, the pre-discovery bible for Titanic buffs, covering in detail the era, the voyage, the sinking and the courtroom aftermath in both the British and American inquiries. A scholarly work with a treasure trove of information, especially in the discussion in 1912 of the real possibility of both the Titanic having broken in two (true) and having suffered smashed in plating and popped rivets (true) as opposed to the “official” account of a intact sinking as a result of a 300ft gash (both incorrect).. A must own for all serious Titanic buffs, scholars and all around nuts.… (plus d'informations)
