Though this story falls into the category of traditional tales, it touches on religion because it is similar to the popular Christian legend of Noah's Ark. I think this is a great story for young children because it demonstrates that there is overlap between diverse cultures.

Stunning woodblock prints illustrate a Karina version of the Noah's arc story. While the story is interesting and would make a good comparison exercise, the illustrations bring the most to this book. They show the native landscape and lifestyle in beautiful detail.

Horn Book (The Horn Book Guide, Spring 2002)
In this well-researched retelling, based on an indigenous legend from Venezuela, Kaputano the Sky Dweller warns the Kariña people that the earth will be destroyed in a flood. Only four couples heed the warning, and after days enduring the cataclysm, Kaputano creates a new paradise for the survivors. The rhythmic text is pared to its essentials. The stunning illustrations are notable for their strength and manipulation of line. Category: Nonfiction-Folktales and Nursery Rhymes. 2001, Groundwood, 40pp, $15.95. Ages 5 to 9. Rating: 2: Superior, well above average.… (plus d'informations)
