Back in the early 70's I wrote a few programs on GE Timesharing using what I now know was Dartmouth BASIC. I had no manuals and only a little experience using FORTRAN in school. From that time until the late 90's when I used Visual Basic, I did my best to avoid BASIC in any form. So it seems I caught BASIC at the very beginning and again at the very end. This book fills in what I missed in the middle. [Like the other .NET languages, VB.NET is so far removed from BASIC that it's really just an alternative syntax for C#.] The book's best feature is that concentrates on why BASIC forked as new versions appeared rather than diving into syntax. The code snippets illustrate the points well. Overall, the author keeps the story well organized; I found myself looking forward to each chapter.
While reading this book my reaction was that the author needs to find an editor. The use of big words does not make up for occasional lapses in grammar.
