Teens who have struggled with getting an accurate diagnosis to an illness will definitely relate to Abby's journey. It takes a long, painful time before the affliction she's dealing with is identified. That's after she's tried more treatments than you could imagine. Her crisis point happens during the most important activity she's involved in, leading to humiliation that turns to the humility one can only find when they do a painful self-analysis. When she's forced to live in another state while getting treatment, not only does she have to do some major soul searching, but she finds a boy who really sees past her affliction because he's dealing with his own growing pains. Add in a brother with a strange way of making money, coupled with her discovery that she might be more successful at a completely different career and this book is the result. It's a fast and very satisfying read.… (plus d'informations)

A little bit different from the standard YA story. Abby is more or less a standard terrible teenager who contracts leprosy. This doesn't instantly make her a better or more caring person but ultimately maybe learns something from her experience. I really disliked Abby but I still enjoyed this book and the whole concept.

This was an interesting read. IT follows a high school 'mean girl' as she discovers and lives through leprosy. She was not easy to connect with because she was so awful, but I liked that she grew and changed throughout story.

Abby Furlowe is not a nice person, she is shallow and vain, a very typical mean girl in her high school. As the new school year begins she is prepared to make it the best year of her life, looking forward to parties with her friends, cheerleading and being one of the popular girls. All of this seems probable until she starts experiencing strange symptoms, like numbness and weird spots on her skin. After a fall during a cheer Abby is finally diagnosed with Hansen's disease, otherwise known as leprosy. Abby has to go away to a treatment center and it is there that she finally sees what a horrible person she has been and she begins to make a change. This is an interesting book, it gives very detailed information on leprosy, which is a topic you don't often see in YA fiction. There is some humor and the characters undergo growth during the story. My biggest issue with the book is that Abby is so unlikeable in the beginning it is difficult to make a connection with her character. I was happy to see her change but I wasn't invested in her because I couldn't bring myself to like her. All in all an interesting book with a good message about not judging people but not a stand out for me. I was given a free copy of the book by the publisher through the early reviewers program in exchange for an honest review.… (plus d'informations)
