With this read, I complete the Homewaters Trilogy (A River Story, Blind Virgil, Dancing on Water), a journey that I am sad to end. All the characters that Anna Linzer has brought us enrich our sense of truth, beauty, and life-well-lived. Dancing on Water is a powerful love story, one that wraps us in the land and water and sky of the Pacific Northwest (and, more specifically, the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands). There are beautiful chapters mixed in with the first person narrative that begin with gentle invitation, as "Here. Watch for a moment. Come sit on the porch..." and continue to paint the backdrop to the narrative with deep poetic detail. Take your time with this work. Savor each word. (Brian)… (plus d'informations)

This novel is full of characters that you will fall in love with (and some you will dislike, but the ones you'll love vastly outnumber the others). Set in the State of Washington, the stories of several women are told across time, linking their fates and heritages, with the eponymous Virgil acting as a sort of balancing, grounding point for the main plotline involving Madeleine. And you get a bittersweet but ultimately happy ending that will move you to tears (good ones). (Brian)

The place of Native American cultures in present day America has received precious little authentic attention over the years. Most of us do not engage with the history, nor do we interact with present day Native American cultures to any meaningful degree. Novels like this one can help rectify that lack, can open our minds a bit to consider the heritages that remain, if struggling to survive. Then we can open up further and seek out interactions when they present themselves in our lives, hopefully with a less prejudiced vision. The stories in Anna Linzer's novel, revealing the role of storytelling and visions in the lives of her characters, will carry forward with us, helping is to see more clearly.
