I was recommended Big Girls Don't and man, was it not the book for me!

This book feels like an early 2000s romantic comedy movie that made no money at the box office and is constantly being replayed on television because the rights were cheap. That seems mean, but that's how this book felt for me. That's not the type of book or movie I enjoy, hence the comparison. Lots of people love those cheesy, goofy romance books - and sometimes I do - but this book didn't hold up.

The female characters are bratty and mean. They never seem to come out of their shell to become better people or have character development. The little kid is a brat biter who also never develops. The two leads hate each other and don't want to date but do anyways. They feel like they have no chemistry whatsoever and that their relationship is being forced. Most of the characters feel like one note romantic comedy characters. It's annoying? It took me forever to get through the first few chapters, but I had high hopes the book would get better and I'd enjoy it more. But it was just the same old, same old and it never changed.

The characters constantly fight and don't communicate. You can tell it's supposed to be funny or goofy, but it gets annoying after the first one.

One out of five stars.

Again, I'm not really that much of a chick lit fan. The humor is just not really my thing. I prefer angst and misunderstandings. This almost had it all set up perfect, but was too much a humor book for me to really get into it. Still, chubby, poor, somewhat insecure heroine with troubled childhood... how could I not enjoy it? Would have preferred it be less light and airy but there were some good bits.

Cute, but not her best work. A lot of the hints at bigger issues--parents having relationship problems, her relationship with her sister, her fear of dancing--are brushed upon, and then neatly resolved in one quick swoop. Kinda disappointing.

Trigger warnings: adoption, offensive language, gambling addiction

Daniella Delaney is opening a cupcake shop in a suburb of Chicago that unbeknownst to her is unironically called Vamptown by the local vampire clan. If that bit of on-the-nose writing bothers you, you’ll like this book as much as I did. Before I proceed, I feel like I should explain my rating process. I start every book off with five out of five stars. As I read, I deduct half stars or whole stars depending on how severe I judge something to be. I was ready to give this book two stars until the very end when it fully earned the rating that I gave it.
