Courte biographie
I was born in the house of my paternal grandparents in a small city in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region. Though my parents soon moved into their own place I spent much of my childhood with my grandfather who was on a disability pension from the Reading Railroad.

Pop was a natural born storyteller and as we walked about town or rode the trains (he had a life pass) to Reading, Philadelphia and other points he would tell tales of his youth, places he had been, things he had done or imagined, and of the railroaders, miners, Molly Maguires and various eccentric folk.

My Dad had a large library and I began reading at an early age. That led to, first, drawing, then writing as I sought to emulate what I read, heard in my grandfather’s tales and those of other elders or imagined.

After high school I sought to enter art school but was drafted into the Army of our mutual uncle. Though I later had college experience, I must re-phrase Melville’s comment to say the Army was my Harvard and Korea (where Uncle sent me instead of Vietnam) was my Yale.

I have a son, Mike, and a daughter, Nina, and four grandsons. http://jrlindermuth.net/

This is the 4th novel in my Sheriff Syl Tilghman historical mystery series. It's the spring of 1899 and preparations are underway for the wedding of Deputy Cyrus Gutshall. Syl is hopeful the event will put his sweetheart Lydia Longlow in the marital mood. Then, murder interrupts plans and the sheriff finds himself on the trail of a gang preying on young immigrant women.

Set in 1897 Pennsylvania, Fallen From Grace jumps right into the action-packed story. Sheriff Sylvester Tilghman enjoys his laid-back career in Arahpot. His routine is disrupted by the murder of a recent arrival to the small town. Much of his investigation centers around a house of ill repute. He befriends the ladies, but his affection is securely set on Lydia, who is independent, employed as a shopkeeper, and taking her sweet time answering his repeated requests for her hand in marriage. As the story raced to a conclusion, I wondered how Lindermuth would tie up all the loose ends. The mystery does come to a satisfying end. I enjoyed this entertaining historical mystery.… (plus d'informations)

Keeping my reading varied, I picked up this book by one of Goodreads' 'participating' authors. It proved to be a good choice which I read in two sittings. My reaction to the book given my background is that this is not another Hollywoodized Western (cultural propaganda), but rather interesting historical fiction.

My background involving growing up in the Northern Rockies with Shoshone friends, I don't have much knowledge of Southwestern Native Americans and associated prominent individuals (other than the Comanche who were a division of the Eastern Shoshone that migrated to the Southwest). Even so, I felt the author handled the characters and their interplay realistically given the cultures involved.

The author skillfully integrated aspects of good storytelling, such as fleshed-out characters, emotions, setting, thrilleresque, a bit of mystery, and even a bit of romance to create interesting and informative historical fiction. As to the bit of mystery, the author leaves crumbs so that when you get to a revelation you might exclaim, "Damn, why didn't I guess that!"

At the end of the story there is an Author's Note the should be read. To broaden one's understanding some of the real characters can be looked-up on Wikipedia.

Thank you, J. R. Lindermuth, for an engaging read.

There is unrest on the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona in the late 1800s as some are agitating for the Indians to unite and leave. There are rumors that those chiefs who oppose leaving will be killed. That includes Geronimo who was just shot as Geronimo Must Die by J. R. Lindermuth begins.

Mickey Free, whose mixed race ancestry is uncertain and was raised among the White Mountain Apaches, does not think the shooting at Geronimo was faked, though others, including his superiors, certainly do. Serving as a scout for the U.S. Army, Mickey moves about the reservation quietly drifting through the camps of the various groups while listening to what is being said. It is a dangerous practice at the best of times, and far more dangerous now as some actively work against peace.

Before long, Mickey Free has a contact among those in the rebellion and begins to work at the edges of the conspiracy against Geronimo and others. As he slowly works his way closer to the discovering the elusive identity of the person behind the conspiracy, he increasingly puts his own life at stake. Having saved Geronimo twice before, the third time may not be the charm for either one of them.

Along with the mystery at work in Geronimo must die, there is plenty about the history and political situation for the Indians on the reservations. While San Carlos is the location, these same issues existed elsewhere throughout the country. This social commentary, often delivered from Mickey’s perspective, serves to enhance the mystery.

Geronimo Must Die is a solidly good western from J. R. Lindermuth. As in other books from this author, while the genre is primarily western, there is a strong mystery element that runs throughout the work. Complex and nuanced this western has fully developed characters, a complicated mystery, a hint of romance, and plenty of history that brings the book alive for the reader. Geronimo Must Die is another very good read from author J. R. Lindermuth and well worth your time.
