Leah Libresco was a prominent atheist blogger when in 2012, as part of her search for truth, she stunned her readers by joining the Catholic Church. In Arriving at Amen Libresco offers an overview of her spiritual journey via reflections on seven types of Catholic prayer: petitions, Confession, the Jesuit Examen, the Rosary, the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours), Lectio Divina, and the Mass.

Libresco is particularly interested in morality and the ways in which spirituality is informed by the sciences. As such, the book will speak especially to young people with an aptitude for science and reasoning. She also includes plenty of philosophical and Shakespearean references.

Arriving at Amen is a hard book to pin down – it is idiosyncratic enough that it will put off some readers, but its idiosyncrasies are part of its charm. Readers are advised to pick it up with an open mind.

Recommended for parish and high school libraries.
