Nage-no-Kata is fully illustrated with b/w photos and diagrams plus a series of 'flicker' photographs. from dust jacket Kata or formal demonstration is an important part of Judo training. A pre-arranged opportunity is given and then the appropriate technique executed. Under these ideal conditions, a far greater degree of perfection is required than when a throw is brought off in the flurry of Randori or free practice. It is now compulsory for students to prepare themselves for examination in the Kata here described before thay can take the 1st Dan (first Black Belt grade) in the British Judo Association, the official Olympic body in this country. This book is designed to help them: by studying the explanations and pictures, it will be possible to master all the main points and most of the fine points as well. Each throw is introduced with the formal 'standard' text, as laid down by the Japanese Convention on Kata held in 1960. This text can be taken to be the official version of Kodakan Kata all over world. A collection of Zen stories and incidents pointing direcly to the truth in ourselves.

There's an old saying in theZen school: 'When you pick them up, the very stones are gold.' When the eye of the heart is opened and we see rightly, the shattered tiles that have been dropped on the road, are shining with the gleam of gold. In our everyday life, to recognize the true worth of every little thing, every tiny fragment of what we are using every day, to respect it-that gives life real meaning...

Trevor Leggett as spent man years training in Adhyatma yoga under the late Dr. Hari Prasad Shastri, and many years as both a student and teacher of Judo and its Zen backround. He holds the Sixth Dan (Senior teacher's degree) in Judo from Kodokan (the first foreigner to do so), and the Seventh Dan in Britain. He has written a number of books on Buddhism and has given many talks, generally in the form of stories. From 1946 to 1970 he was Head of the Japanese Service of the BBC, in which he still broadcasts weekly in Japanese; and in 1984 was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the Japanese Government. In 1987 he was invited to Japan by the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (Society for the Propagation fo Buddhist Teaching) to receive an award for his translations of buddhist texts.

What happens when a young Zen monk makes a terrible mistake at a public ceremony? What sort of reception does a well-known abbot get today when he visits his old teacher? The answers to these questions can be found in this fascinating translation of Japanese Zen texts by Trevor Leggett. From historical incidents to classic Zen commentaries, this is an account of actual zen life-the life of traditional temple training-and a valuable guide to the meaning of Zen in Japan.

'Every page of this profoundly erudite book is written with compelling insight...There are five sections, each one reflecting in depth a different Zenic emphasis of a particular Matter or School of Zen...the most important secton is the first, an inspired and inspiring commentary on the 'Heart Sutra' (which) is considered to be the very kernel of Mahayana buddhism...'-Theosophical Journal

'...one of the few really good books on Zen.'-Friends of the Western Buddhist Order

While much has been written about the physical techniques of martial arts such as judo and kendo, the training of the mind is held to be more important than superior technique. Trevor Leggett, a renowned scholar and an advanced judo practitioner, now presents general readers with a clear introduction to Budo-the 'inner way' of the martial arts, written from within the tradition itself.

Including eighteen short pieces similar to the graphic style that characterises Zen instruction, The Spirit of Budo is written with simplicity and humour, but with an underlying discipline and authority derived from a lifetime of spiritual and martial training. Leggett addresses matters including sportsmanship, achieving freedom of mind, training the inner self, developing an inner calm, and the four keys to learning-instruction, observation, inference, and personal experience. The book instructs readers on the cultivation of these Budo qualities and suggests ways in which the lessons learned can be applied to daily life as well as to the practice of the marital arts.

Trevor Leggett is the author of Realization of the Supreme Self and translator from the Sanskrit of The Complete Commentary by Sankara on teh Yoga Sutras, both published by Kegan Paul International.

In 1984, Trevor Leggett was awarded a high grade of the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure, for services to Japanese and Eastern culture generally. He holds a 6th Dan Senior Teacher's certificate in Judo from the Kodokan, Tokyo.
