John Lardner (1912–1960)

John Lardner wrote this in 1942 as a means of educating Americans about what life and war in and around Australia was like for American servicemen. He does a pretty effective job of it, particularly when he focuses on individuals' stories. Most moving was the brief description of Bataan and Corregidor, including the eight Army nurses evacuated on his ship.
