The author, who is a professor of psychology and director of clinical training in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, makes a very compelling conclusion that paranoia and paranoid disorders have not received sufficient attention from the professional community and the popular press. More people are killed in the U.S. by paranoid individuals than by terrorists and this phenomena is likely to increase due to the American predilection for guns, easy access to guns, the refusal of the pathologically paranoid to recognize their paranoia and seek treatment, the inability of primary care physicians to diagnose and recommend treatment, the reluctance of friends of friends or neighbours to report to the authorities instances of family member paranoia, and the inability of law enforcement agencies to be proactive in the apprehension of paranoid individuals in anticipation of a murder spree.
