Faculty face ethical decisions each and every day. Ethics code violations appear in the news from time to time like when a well-known politician claims degrees or authorship, etc. of work that wasn't his own. Students, too, face ethical decisions - to cheat or not to cheat, to other types of ethical infractions. Many faculty are less comfortable of the ethics of researching their students' learning - known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning or SoTL - since some of the principles of SoTL research seem to confront the idea of detached examination as the researcher.
