Mi è difficile scrivere qualcosa di inedito e originale su questo romanzo: non perché abbia esaurito le idee per scrivere recensioni (spero) interessanti, ma perché L’aspetto dell’amore ha in sostanza la stessa trama de Il suono dell’amore, il primo volume della serie. L’unica differenza è il numero di pagine, visto che L’aspetto dell’amore è una storia breve.

È stata una delusione con carico da undici se ci aggiungete che il primo volume mi era piaciuto poco o niente (quindi eviterò di chiedermi perché cavolo abbia comprato anche il seguito)…

Comunque, adesso che la coppia Jordan-Sebastian è formata, ho notato un picco glicemico decisamente fastidioso. Ma erano così sdolcinati anche nel primo libro? Non me lo ricordo… probabilmente l’ho rimosso…

In definitiva, è una storia breve da leggere se Il suono dell’amore vi è piaciuto e volete continuare a leggere la serie, visto che vi accade un fatto che – suppongo – funga da prologo per il terzo volume. Io mi fermo qui (sempre che, al prossimo giro sul catalogo di Dreamspinner Press, mi ricordi che questa serie non mi è piaciuta e che non è proprio il caso di comprare pure Il tocco dell’amore…).… (plus d'informations)

Dalla trama, Il suono dell'amore sembrava uno di quei libri tanto pucciosi che adesso mi sarebbe proprio andato. E grazie a Sebastian lo sarebbe pure stato... purtroppo, però, c'era anche Jordan.

Passo indietro. Sebastian e Jordan sono i protagonisti di questa storia: il primo è sordo e lavora come poliziotto volontario, mentre Jordan è stato appena trasferito in un'altra città dopo essere rimasto ferito in un conflitto a fuoco. Sebastian è, più o meno, il classico bravo ragazzo, mentre Jordan zoccoleggia allegramente in giro e fa lo stronzetto quando si annoia.

Con Sebastian non ho avuto grandi problemi, mi ci sono trovata bene, ma Jordan avrei voluto radiarlo dal romanzo una pagina sì e l'altra pure. Avete presente una lagna? Ecco, Jordan è la quintessenza della lagna. A peggiorare la situazione c'è anche il fatto che l'intero romanzo è narrato dal suo punto di vista. Vi troverete più di una volta a rimpiangere i bei tempi in cui zoccoleggiava ed era quindi troppo impegnato per pensare troppo.

C'è anche da dire che ho avuto l'impressione che Jordan fosse un aborto di personaggio. Ogni tanto (e a volte quasi a sproposito) la Laine ci spara un dettaglio su lui e poi lo lascia lì. Per esempio, la faccenda dei tatuaggi. È un aspetto importante di Jordan, ma l'autrice lo butta lì, a casaccio. È come se ci volesse dire: so che Jordan potrebbe essere un bel personaggio, ma io non ho voglia di farvelo piacere.

So che è il primo di una serie e la SiPriLi è sempre lì, in agguato, ma così è troppo: sarebbe stato meglio spostare la questione tatuaggi nel secondo libro e trattarla con l'attenzione che meritava.… (plus d'informations)

Twenty years ago, the world changed for humanity. In an event known only as the Cataclysm, everyone lost their memories. They lost not only memories of who they are but also how the world worked. Technological advances were all lost. Relying on a small number of books that have survived, society has started anew.
The Scout and Ranger Corps was started to seek out any missing survivors and to acquire additional resources that may have been left behind. Dev is the captain of a ship involved in this work, and he's been joined by Shay, a scholar who has spent time looking for clues to secrets of the past. They are on their way to Innsmouth, Massachusetts, to try to learn about this mysterious city that doesn't show up on any maps.

What awaits them is beyond anything they could have expected. It turns out humanity is not alone. And the true threat is borne right out of their own imaginations.

I loved the concept of this book. An omnipotent villain who fashions their weapon out of old-school science fiction texts? Not only is it an interesting throwback, but it's an interesting notion to see people's own ideas used against them in this way. But I found the execution to be challenging for me. Most of these key aspects of the story seem to be glossed over. And the resolution seemed way too easy.

There's also the issue of Dev and Shay's relationship. Talk about 0 to 100 in less than 60 seconds. How these two go from the occasional glance to pledging their undying love with nothing in between seemed far-fetched, even for a speculative fiction novel.

But I'm still giving this a mild recommendation. Why? Because if you go in knowing these things, I think it can be fun and enjoyable. It's one of those books where the concept itself is so fun and intriguing, everything else is secondary and can be overlooked.
