Konkel wisely places a cast of characters for reference prior to opening this epic fiction, and then the novel commences covering pre-WW II in a manner that invites curiosity in investigating Soviet history, gradually unwinding dark aspects of wartime atrocities and manipulations and facts that have rarely found a place in literature. The secrets - it would be unfair to share in a review, as the pleasure of tackling this mammoth work is their discovery. A suggestion of the suspense this novel addresses is present early on - ‘Fedin never found out who had planted the paper in the seam of the desk.
