This is one of my favorite zombie books. I picked it as a freebie from Amazon and never regretted it. What I did regret is that I have a number of people I recommended this to and they are unable to get it. The book was picked up for publishing with no date set yet.
Cyrus V. Sinclair is the main character. He is a survivor of a zombie apocalypse. He is also a sociopath so he really doesn't care about all the dead. Then he meets up with another survivor, Gabe, and decides he needs to leave the apartment where he is holed up. Along the way they meet up with Frank and, my personal favorite character, Blaze. It's action packed and messy. When it does get released again I highly recommend it to all zombie genre fans.

Update: It has been 3 years since I wrote that review. The Undead Situation is now available. It is still on of my favorite Zbooks. It is like a visit to a haunted house; the anticipation before you get there, the excitement when you enter and then the terror followed by relief and giddiness that you survived. There is a complexity to Cyrus - he is a sociopath who needs to learn to work with others in order to survive killers who are mindless. The characters are well written and you come to care about them. I think it is a sign of the author's gift of writing that we can actually come to love a sociopath and root for him. I still highly recommend this book. And now you can get it so what are you waiting for?

I loved The Undead Situation. When I finished it I couldn't wait for the next book. I am happy to say it is here and it was worth the wait. It wasn't what I was expecting. That, my friends, is the huge appeal. I cannot guess where this author is going. I love Cyrus. I enjoy watching his progress, or lack of, unfold. One of the things I like about this author is that she does not rush Cyrus through his changes. That is why the ending of this surprised me. I did feel a moment of what happened at the end. I first felt it was rushed. But after letting it settle on me, I think it was like that because to keep going at pace would have made the book long and possibly boring. So I would like to tell you to expect that feeling and let it settle. Keep reading and then think it over. I believe that the author made the right decision with her ending. I am not going to go into a lot of details as (1) there is a synopsis (2) there are other reviews and (3) if I tell you everything why should you read it? so why should you read it? The story line is excellent and surprising. The characters are well written and in an odd way, likable. Okay, they are likable if they like you, you might die if they don't. And finally, in my opinion, it is one of the better Zbooks. There is an amazing amount of them out now, (and I have read an amazing amount of them - even the really bad ones, so go ahead and trust me). I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. I am sure the author will once again surprise the heck out of me.

It is a Zbook so expect the stuff you would see in one. This means you might want to read it first before your child, (hopefully an older child but that is your decision). Which is a good idea anyway as it gives you something to talk about.

ABR's full Pulse audiobook review can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

First thoughts about the cover of Pulse? A contamination symbol over a city? Hmm… Outbreak story! YES! What sort of cataclysmic event will unfold in this story..? I felt chills chase up and down my arms at the prospect of delving into such a story.

This story starts with bad sickly fish. Yes, fish. Makes me afraid of sea food. I love the idea of this. It brings the idea of something this horrible being possible. The main character is Dom. Dom is your typical male. Silly, sweet, funny, heels over head in love with his girlfriend… There are several stories going on at once, but they all tie in together eventually. One of the other characters to watch/listen is Adam. Adam is a CDC scientist trying to figure out a cure for this infection.

She stunk of sour milk and dumpsters. That line made my nose snarl up and my stomach clinch. I like that the ‘zombies’ could do rambling crazy talking. This gave the story just that much more horror to it. The end of chapter six was both horrible and awesome. I loved how the crazy zombie lady filleted someone alive.

These ‘zombies’ are infected with a parasite rather than a virus. The parasite they have affects the brain. More or less making them completely base instinct, no moral compass bonkers. It reminds me of the movie The Crazies.

What makes this a good book to read/listen to is the fact that it makes this seem simi-plausible. The ‘What if’ lingers. With strange things happening in the world today, the ‘What if’s’ are all to real. It brings to mind of outbreaks like Ebola, the Flu, Encephalitis. Ironically it mentions a general link to Ebola in chapter seventeen or eighteen.

There seems to be one error about a smart phone and gun in chapters thirty-six and thirty-seven. This is an author error and not a narrator error. It says in chapter thirty-six that the military took Dom’s cell and gun. In chapter thirty-seven he has his cell again. Also, in chapter thirty-six they took Dom’s gun, but in thirty-seven Chelsie has a gun. Why would the military take Dom’s gun and leave Chelsie with her’s?

Over all I enjoyed this story. It had a new twist to the ‘zombie’ vibe. I liked that. The narrator is Michael Bower. He has a nice voice. Sharp, crisp, and edgy at the right times. Perfect for a story like this. The book is 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 38 seconds long. The author is Eloise J. Knapp.

Warning - If you have a weak stomach, this book is not for you. There are lots of blood, guts, and horror, exploding stomachs, torture, and creepy parasites that will haunt your dreams.

This book left me with the feeling that things can change quickly. Sometimes things are completely out of our control. The best we can do is to keep ourselves safe. Try to keep those we love safe. And try to avoid those that would drag us down into their madness.

It is actually a bit better than book one. It is still a mature, non-hack n slash zombie book - well, there is some hack n slash, but it is not so much against the zombies as it is against the other survivors.

In fact... it is almost like the zombies are just a side concern of the book. There is only interaction with them when necessary, and all the 'bad guys' here are other humans. Zombies are sorta treated like mosquitoes: very annoying, you try to avoid them, and kill them when they're close enough, but you won't be digging out the fogger to spray the forest around you.

Cyrus does spend a little too much time thinking about how sociopathic he is (or is not as the case may be), but I suppose that is also part of his narcissistic nature.

Is the, err, religous extremism realistic... no, not really, but it is as well written as such a theme could be. And these fanatics are as believable as anything else is in a zombie apocalypse. I will keep my eyes open for more books by Knapp.
