Ursula Vernon is a freelance writer, artist and illustrator. She received an undergraduate degree in anthropology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She took several art classes in college. Her first children's book, Nurk: The Strange Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, afficher plus was published in 2008. Her other works include Black Dogs: The House of Diamond and the Dragonbreath series. She also writes and illustrates the webcomic Digger and the creator of The Biting Pear of Salamanca. A clever tale that subverts a few fantasy expectations, [Nettle & Bone] may be Marra's adventures with a found family, but it also lets readers behind the scenes of the Great Quest to reflect on the drudgery and difficulty involved. Don't let that be a turn off - the journey is enjoyable for the reader, with a witty narrator reminding us of the quotidian without getting bogged down in boring details. It reminded me a little of Diana Wynne Jones' way of writing books firmly in the fantasy genre while also playing with the tropes and being wholly original. Marra is a fun heroine to follow, one that at age 30 is a little older than most, not always sure of herself, but still attempting to do the right thing even if she's not sure how or if she'll succeed. And, at just under 250 pages, it's rather spare and a refreshing change from some of the bloated fantasy tales out there.… (plus d'informations)
