This was a great book! A really exciting read which captures the very real self-centred but endearing hero very well. We get lots of real history interspersed with a rollicking adventure. Enough depth for an adult reader (parent or teacher) to enjoy while great delight for the young reader as well. The despair of the young boy "sold" to the terrible pirate pulls us into a hair-raising voyage. The story could also be a great place to explore Western Australian history and geography. Recommended for boys (and girls) from middle primary upwards.… (plus d'informations)

A moving story about a simple act of compassion in the midst of carnage and devastation on the battlefield.

An altogether beautiful book though perhaps not in the traditional sense. A somber but ultimately inspiring tale of humanity amidst the inhumanity. Set in the trenches of WWI on Christmas Day, a young soldier's small act of bravery and kindness softens the weary, hardened hearts on both sides of the conflict.

A tale that illustrates the true beauty of the day and the best of all young boys/ soldiers/ cannon fodder everywhere. It touched my heart.

Harrison-Lever's sepia tone illustrations are a perfect match for Jorgensen's simply but lovely text.

I'd gift this to any veteran or mother of a veteran and, of course, any children of my acquaintance without reservation. A meaningful Christmas story for all ages.
