I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. It is a book with a ghost and two children protagonists investigating what is happening to the other ghosts set in Victorian England. I briefly began reading it to gain a feel for it and became caught up in the story, choosing to continue reading it rather than returning to another book I had started previously.

I appreciate the quality of the descriptions. Here are two examples from chapter three:
"Mr. Thornton had been a cruel and strict disciplinarian who deployed a heavy wooden ruler on the backsides of his pupils, hitting them in time with each remonstrating syllable he uttered."
and
"Short, plump, with perfect porcelain skin and auburn hair that fell in ringlets, Alice was everything Lapsewood looked for in a girl and everything he had failed to find in life."

I enjoyed reading the book.

Cinder makes you romp to her tune.
Cinder works very hard every day at home to clean her aunt's and cousin's mess. But she does it happily while practising her dance moves. Then, one day she overhears her cousins' conversations about a disco competition by the disco king, Travis, where the winner gets to be his dance partner. She wanted to go not to win but to show off her moves. That's not easy. She had a truckload of mess to clean at home. What's next? Yup, you guessed the story right.

We typically read a book because we spotted it in a library, bookstore, or someone recommended it. But, we came across Cindergorilla because someone forwarded a youtube link to a song that accompanied this book. It was peppy and fun. So, we read the book after watching the video.
We are not big fairytale fans, but this book, a Cinderella's retelling, is worth reading. Of course, we all know the story, but this book stands out for its illustrations - bright and beautiful. The story is about self-confidence, patience and perseverance leading to victory.
Kids will definitely enjoy this book as a bedtime read with positive affirmations.

middlegrade/teen fiction (murder, ghosts, hell hounds, and mystery/adventure). Multiple characters, some of them ghosts, with lives and afterlives that are woven together very neatly. Would definitely recommend this one, along with Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, to folks who enjoy darker stories.
