This book is so precious it belongs in a Wes Anderson production. Identical twins Cordelia and Ophelia have just moved with their family into their deceased Great Uncle's house. They discover an unusual doll in the attic and its promptly stolen! Who could it have been? Unroll the eccentric cast of characters....

The book is ostensibly the girls' own creation. They alternate chapters - Cordelia prefers mysteries, happily enough, and Ophelia literary flair. They criticize each others work and honesty. Jackson gives the girls distinct personalities with their writing styles, pokes some fun at juvenile genres with the girls' comments on how books are writing them while themselves writing a book.

The whole reason I read the book was that it falls into that rare category of children's books featuring dolls that aren't 'Hitty' that treats the subject as interesting in itself without making the readers glaze over and makes sure those dolls aren't threatening to revenge stab you with scissors, imprison you, or ruin your life. I like those books, of course, but its a nice break to read something on the subject that's not too saccharine and entertaining.

My original copy is incredibly beaten up but will be read by my grandchildren.

The children, used to having the entire lake to themselves, playing Indians, are devastated when a Boy Scout camp is built at the end of the lake. I think it's a classic. Wonderful story of kids growing up and dealing with change.… (plus d'informations)
