I loved the recipes in this book. When you catch yourself thinking "I must try that one", then you know you're reading a good cookbook. I liked the little glimpses of Hudgens's family's culinary past and his own journey into a career in food, as well as the insight onto life in Deep Springs College in the high California desert. The food is the hearty family-feeding type of fare that I favour anyway - and I was pleased to find a few nods to English cuisine in there, too.

My only tiny gripe is the presence of a couple of recipes which called for a can of condensed soup. Sorry to be snobby about it, but to my mind a chef should not be relying on processed foods. Especially not in a book subtitled "a hand-crafted life".

But otherwise I enjoyed it - there aren't that many cookbooks that can be read like a novel, but this one falls into that category.
