This detailed summary of Chinese history and culture seems to be a standard in the field, since I see it frequently when browsing in the Asian history section of bookstores. It is difficult to summarize. The book was structured, according to the author, in a way roughly corresponding to the ideal essay of a Confucian scholar, the eightlegged essay. Each epoch of Chinese history is introduced with a political and military overview, followed by chapters on thought, literature, and art. It is amazing how unfamiliar the names and events are, and also amazing to realize the vast richness of the culture. I began this book shortly after an interesting tour of a chinese archeology exhibit at the Smithsonian, including the terracotta soldiers buried with the emperor. I was very taken with the explanation of Confucian thought, with its emphasis on right conduct and the maximizing of happiness in the here and now.… (plus d'informations)
