The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is research regarding how students learn, a shift recommended by Boyer in "Scholarship Reconsidered" (1990). Some disciplines and universities have made efforts to move the discussion from teaching to learning - and SoTL has been a means by which that shift has been enacted. This book explores the movement, remembering the past, describing the present, and offering suggestions for how academia might move forward.

As the authors state, teaching is a public event that occurs behind physically and metaphorically closed doors. They suggest that those closed doors are why teaching has not progressed at the same rate as disciplinary knowledge (through research) since research is public but teaching remains private. This book promotes the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL). Though SoTL may take different forms in various disciplines, it seems to always have the following four characteristics: 1) based on questions about student learning; 2) conducted by gathering and exploring evidence; 3) attempting and refining new insights; and 4) sharing results through (peer reviewed) venues. They recommend the development of Faculty Commons - areas where faculty meet to discuss all aspects of teaching.… (plus d'informations)
