Thanks to Goodreads and the publisher for a free copy of Of Beasts and Beings!

Set in post-apocalyptic Africa, Of Beasts and Beings follows a kidnapped and ransomed scavenger and a schoolteacher as they deal with their surroundings -- horrifying and uncomfortable. Their stories explore oppression, violence, race, and how those all play into people's experiences and ownership over their own stories.

There's a lot to be said about the ending of this book, and how the scavenger and the school teacher are connected... and with good reason, because jeez, I thought I knew where the story was going but I had no idea.

But what really pulled me into the book was the writing style. The prose is beautiful and horrible at once. I have never before encountered descriptions that I found so gorgeous and compelling and uncomfortable at once. Definitely recommended.

Very bland first part that is more commentary and documentary style... but stick to it like it was a required reading book in LIT class because the reading experience will become profound. It is a window into someplace we all need to be exposed to; whether you take anything away from it is entirely up to you.

Beautiful, challenging and surprising novel comprised of two interrelated stories, one about a nameless man enslaved by a gang and another about a teacher getting ready to leave his country during a period of extreme civil unrest and disintegration. The two stories came together in a way that really surprised and delighted me. It's a difficult and rewarding book.
