I stood near the prison in Khartoum as Mahmoud Mohamed Taha was hanged for apostasy by Nimeiri's Islamist regime. He is a man I respect and admire greatly, a true martyr for his faith. He separates the writings in the Holy Qur'an into two sections, those of Mecca and those of Medina. One contains eternal truths which cannot change; the other contains pragmatic teachings about the governance of a state, which can change according to historical circumstances and based on the eternal truths.
