Eden, my first read/listen from author Martin Roy Hill, entertaining & enjoyable. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Tim Danko's narration made the book flow smoothly & quickly. I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Few historical items have the power to excite the reader like the Spear of Destiny. It’s up there with the Ark of the Covenant and King Arthur’s sword Excalibur. Also known as the Holy Spear or the Lance of Longinus, it is said that it was the weapon used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ as he was dying on the cross.

There is no shortage of works featuring the Holy Lance in book, film or even video game format. It plays a central role in the movie Constantine, features in the video game Tomb Raider Chronicles and even perennial relic chaser Indiana Jones has had a shot at recovering it.

When the location of the spear is rumoured to be in a Nazi storage bunker toward the end of World War II, an American OSS unit, directed by General Patton, is sent to retrieve it. Unknown to the Americans, the Russians have also sent a commando squad and this is further complicated when the Germans assemble their own team to join the hunt. With so many fake relics posing as the real thing, who will get to the genuine artefact first?

What follows is a gripping thriller that follows the three groups through enemy controlled territory where the lines are constantly moving.

Filled with complicated personalities all trying to serve their countries, and in some cases their own ends, in the best way they can. War brings out the best and the worst in people and both sides are on show as the tide turns one way and then another as the search races to its exciting climax.

Not so much a war story, despite its location both geographically and in time, this is an enthralling ‘boys own’ adventure in which mystery and intrigue abound. Historical fact meets historical fiction in an entertaining fusion that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat throughout

I’d recommend this to readers with an interest in WWII, Adolf Hitler, Historical artefacts and relics or anyone who just loves a good adventure story.

Review of eBook

Legend says that the Holy Lance, once used by the Roman centurion Longinus to stab Jesus Christ in the side, had the power to fulfill destiny, to make the possessor a great conqueror. With the Americans, the Russians, and the Germans all desiring to possess the Lance, there are soon three separate squads charged with retrieving the Lance, commonly referred to as the Spear of Destiny.

Raymond MacAuley, a member of Special Forces of the Office of Strategic Services, leads the three-man team Parsifal team. Hans Steiner commands a small convoy while Valentin Valery leads his Russian team. With three teams of soldiers in search of the Spear of Destiny, who will end up with the true Lance? And is it possible that there is truth in the legend?

=========

Inspired by historical events, this World War Two thriller is anchored by a strong sense of place and compelling, well-developed characters. The author’s careful combining of historical fact and the captivating fictional plot give the narrative a realistic feel that pulls readers into the telling of the tale from the outset.

Tension mounts as the searchers move toward a confrontation, leaving readers to guess which team will be victorious.

When unexpected revelations take the story in a surprising direction, readers are kept guessing as the unfolding narrative leads to a surprising denouement. Readers of this genre will find much to appreciate in this unique tale.

Highly recommended.

I received a free advance review copy of this book through BookSirens, and I am voluntarily leaving this review.

NCIS Special investigator Linus Schag’s latest mission is to head to northern Iraq to take custody of two Navy SEALs accused of the murder of an Army Green Beret.

What seems like the simplest of tasks is made a lot tougher when thanks to an ISIS (the local Islamic terrorist group) explosive device; the prisoner’s make their escape on a stolen Navy river boat and head off upriver.

Teaming up with a member of the Army CID, an unhelpful patrol boat crew and a shifty Iraqi interpreter, Schag sets off into hostile country to track down the fugitives and bring them to justice.

Why have the hunted due headed into territory infested with extremists rather then make a run for the border? Schag is about to find out

The author has written a nicely executed plot filled with interesting characters that, whilst heading towards the resolution of the main objective, has time to wander off on to sub-plots that complement the rest of the story.

Schag’s relationships with his hastily assembled crew are allowed to develop and grow throughout the book. In the beginning there is a degree of friction that comes with working with strangers especially in a combat zone.

Other related topics are covered sensitively by the author and he raises points on friendly fire, racism, mistrust and family commitments.

The story is fast paced and doesn’t get bogged down with all of the extraneous military detail that seems to happen in a lot of books of this type. We get what we need to know about the hardware to maintain the realistic feel without it getting distracting.

Just like real forays into war zones, nobody is ever safe and the author doesn’t allow the reader to get complacent about their favourite characters.

This is the third book in the Linus Schag NCIS Thriller series but is a perfectly self-contained story that does not require the reader to have any prior knowledge of the characters or the setting.

What I liked most about this was the pace of the plot, the interaction between the members of Schag’s team and also the portrayal of the escaped SEALs and their struggle to escape both Schag and the ISIS terrorists as they made their way upriver.

The sub-plot involving the Iraqi interpreter and the trip to Mosul was also a stand out feature for me that brought a further element of reality to the whole thing.

Overall this was hard to put down and difficult to fault. It’s given me a desire to go back and read books 1 and 2.
