Castle on Hester Street is a warm and whimsical tale about immigration. Having left Russia for America, Julie’s Jewish grandparents describe two different journeys. After learning about the Jewish tradition of tzedakah boxes, Dalia shares her knowledge with her younger brother, Yossi, by telling him what her savings can help to provide for someone in need. Includes a note about the history and customs of tzedakah boxes.
I really enjoyed this book because I learned about a Hebrew tradition of charity. The book is about a brother and sister to discover the true meaning of charity. This book has a great message of donation and kindness that can be translated to any culture or religion. This would be a great inspiration for other classroom activities dealing with charity work and donations. I would recommend reading this with Jewish students as well as students of other religions and cultures.
