The Ragged Irregulars is a mix of part yearbook and part historical journal for the 91st Bomb Group. It is also a well-written coffee table book that allows the descendants of "the great generation".to see what their fathers, grand-fathers did to put an end to the Nazis. The Ragged Irregulars sticks to its yearbook/journal structure without editorializing on the many facets of this new type of warfare whose strategy was to eliminate the ability of the Axis Powers to "make" war. The 91st Bomb Group flew out of a converted R.A.F. base at Bassingbourn that had been turned over to the Yanks. Bassingbourn supposedly had the best facilities of any USAAF base in the United Kingdom. Located about 45 minutes from Buckingham Palace, the King and Queen honored the 91st with a visit. Clark Gable spent some of his service time with the 91st. William Wyler joined the 324th squadron in order to shoot his documentary/propaganda account of the last flight of The Memphis Belle. As the Memphis Belle completed its 25th mission, they were then ordered stateside along with their fort to tour the USA, kiss babies, and sell war bonds. The Ragged Irregulars of Bassingbourn are the courageous airmen who suffered considerable casualties and loss, but with the introduction of the long ranged fighter, their losses diminished and their successful missions established allied air superiority while writing the first book of tactics for the American Air Force.

This book follows the 91st bomb group from its inception to the end of the war. Every mission is mentioned and the planes that were shot down are often noted. Lots of detail with the serial numbers and names of all the planes. Some great nose art too. Exactly like the pictures I have from my dad.
