Born in San Francisco, Calif., Robert Hass received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary's College and his masters and Ph.D. from Stanford University. After graduating, Hass wrote his first collection of poetry, Field Guide, which went on to win the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award in 1973. afficher plus Hass's second collection, Praise, won the Williams Carlos Williams Award in 1979. Selected by the Library of Congress as Poet Laureate of the United States in 1995-96, Hass has taught writing at the University of California at Berkeley since 1989. Hass has co-translated several volumes of poetry by Nobel Laureate and fellow colleague Czeslaw Milosz and is the editor of The Essential Haiku. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins

A Little Book on Form: An Exploration into the… par Robert Hass
As someone with scant formal training in the structural and technical aspects of poetry, I found this book both fascinating and frustrating. It wasn't until the very end that I finally accepted that Hass was offering a richly annotated reference work and not a true introductory guide to the subject of poetic form. Now that I'm over my disappointment, I'm.excited to go back and dip into those sections that intrigued me most, mining Hass' lists of exemplars and perhaps even taking up his challenge to diagram some poems. All of that newfound enthusiasm aside, as a reference work his book is missing some important components, namely an index (!) and a good glossary. The presence of those two items would have bumped my review up one star.… (plus d'informations)
There are few Japanese Haiku I don't enjoy, whether I grasp them or feel them or not.
Gorgeous and amazing, this was my first poetry book for Robert Hass. I was beyond moved, clipping pictures, telling a friend how they related to piece of my life or present writings, and quoted off. I cannot wait to find more of his!
This book began as a series of newspaper columns that each presented a poem with commentary by the then poet laureate of the United States, Robert Hass. Assembled as an anthology it is a great source for poetry aficionados to dip into and savor the delight of poems great and small. The poems are welcome in Keat's "Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" or any other season.
