Noorhaidi Hasan

Besides delivering lectures in a dozen academic institutions and presenting papers in various academic forums (workshop, seminar, and conference) at home and abroad, he taught political Islam in the State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. In addition, he has regularly published papers in refereed journals and short articles in newspapers and newsletters. His publications include “In Search of Identity: the Contemporary Islamic Communities in Southeast Asia,” Studia Islamika-ndonesian Journal for Islamic Studies 7, 3 (2000), pp. 67-110. “September 11 and Islamic Militancy in Post-New Order Indonesia”, in K.S. Nathan and Mohammad Hashim Kamali (eds.), Islam in Southeast Asia: Political, Social and Strategic Challenges for the 21st Century (Singapore: ISEAS, 2005), pp. 301-322. “Between Transnational Interest and Domestic Politics: Understanding Middle Eastern Fatwas on Jihad in the Moluccas”, Islamic Law and Society 12, 1 (2005), pp. 73-92. He has also published a book, Laskar Jihad: Islam, Militancy and the Quest for Identity in Post-New Order Indonesia (Ithaca, New York: Southeast Asia Program, Cornell University, 2006), which was derived from his dissertation awarded cum laude.

Noorhaidi Hasan, born on 7 December 1971 in Amuntai, Indonesia, is a scholar of political Islam whose research interests include various manifestations of political Islam in contemporary Indonesia and other Muslim-populated countries in Southeast Asia. Having completed his BA in Islamic law from the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (1994), he was appointed a teaching staff at the same university. In 1997 he had the opportunity to continue his graduate studies abroad owing to the scholarship provided by different institutions in the Netherlands. He obtained MA from Leiden University (1999), MPhil from the International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (2000), and PhD from Utrecht University (2005).
