A strange dark, twisting tale filled with nightmares and strange happenings. While it is not a truly scary book, it does leave you feeling uneasy and apprehensive. Well written, it keeps the reader engaged and turning the pages to find the monster under the bed.

A wonderful prequel, well written. It whetted the appetite for the rest of the series.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Lana Hart was an unknown author for me prior to reading her book The Haunted Lingerie (The Curious Collectibles #1). I had read the books blurb and found it interesting, curious and humorous, it piqued my interest, but still had no idea what to actually expect. The author kindly provided a copy to me for an honest review. When I posted what I was reading on Goodreads people would reach out to me with a laugh in their notes and funny comments. Well to all who read this review – This was a great book, I really enjoyed it.

The book has a little bit of everything – romance (had the romance been stronger and I felt more of a connection between Misty and Jack this would have been a 5 star read), intrigue, mystery, suspense, betrayal, a good slice of the paranormal, gore, a “oh I wasn't expecting that revelation” and a BIG twist. I really liked how the author would set up various characters in the story and make you wonder about their part in the overall plot, and just when you thought you had it figured out, a little thing like a whistled melody would make you question your decision, and focus on another character.

The writing was good, very descriptive, good flow, filled with humor, innuendo, and sexy little touches. This was not an erotic read, I would classify this as romantic suspense, but lite on the romance. There was no cliff hanger, a satisfying resolution to all of the stories interwoven plot threads and an HEA. My first thought when I finished reading was “ I wonder if there will be more books, if this will be a series…I really thought that Mrs. Clathermont’s character and collectibles shop had a lot to offer. I was also surprised how caught up in the story I had gotten, how I never missed those steamy, lust filled, descriptive sex scenes that many books use to keep the reader’s attention, or how the H/h didn't resolve their difficulties or emotional short comings with sexual action.

The primary characters were very life like, there was some back story provided for Jack and Misty, just enough so you could understand some of the decisions they had made in the past and how those decisions might affect their actions throughout the story. I had wished for more of a connection and stronger chemistry between Jack and Misty, but since I didn't see the romance as the focal point of the book it really didn't bother me.

There were at least three stand out gore scenes some may call it horror scenes, the opossum, the drowning and the bathtub scene for me, and they were well written and provided a great visual in my mind’s eye, these scenes were supportive of the story and not used to add shock value to the story.

I'm purposely not relating details from the actual story, as I think knowing more then what’s provided in the books blurb could spoil the reading experience. All in all I was very pleased with this read – a strong 4 stars IMO. Wishing to be supportive of the author’s efforts, I have purchased my own copy, hoping that reader support will convince the author to continue with the basic theme created in this book with Mrs Clathermont’s antique curio shop, and the strange things that could happen in that quiet little harbor town.

The Magic Mirror (The Curious Collectibles Series) by Lana Hart presents the reader with an artist’s palette filled with a dark shadowy figure, strange occurrences, memories of first love, suspense, and a town oblivious to it all.

"It cast a glance in the direction of a small, yet hulking shadow perched atop a shelf inside its work room. Calamity, the dark figure called it, and had for some time now. It was a fitting name, for that was all the little beast had caused since it crawled out of the corrupted arcanum that had created it, all ichor and chaos. It was a creature composed of the darkest magic, and soon it would be unleashed upon the world to do what it did best.

More accurately, it would be unleashed upon Sanctum Harbor. More specifically, it would determine whether a certain someone was the sort of special being the dark figure suspected it was.

If it was right, then the time of its ascension was close at hand. Its Dark Orchard would be restored and all the waiting and planning would finally pay off."

Hart, Lana (2014-06-09). The Magic Mirror (The Curious Collectibles Series) (Kindle Locations 26-31). Wyrmwood Publishing & Editing. Kindle Edition.

The novella introduces us to Jack Snow, Mrs. Clathermont and her Curious Collectibles shop, Jack’s mother, and a few residents of Sanctum Harbor. The story focuses on Jack Snow, coming back home to Sanctum Harbor and the strange happenings he encounters. we find that things are not all what they appear to be on the surface.

I enjoyed the author’s prose, she can be extremely descriptive, her words setting the mood, or conveying feelings.

"As dusk took its place upon its starry throne, it cast long shadows where none had been before. His mother’s house seemed more sinister now ; each darkened window was an empty eye sunken deep into its façade, glaring at him as he ambled along the path toward the front door. He couldn’t see a light on anywhere, even though the curtains were still pulled aside. Darkness held dominion over all."

This is the 2nd book I've read by the author, and having read the books out of order, I feel, reading the Magic Mirror first gives more of Jack’s backstory, so when we meet him in The Haunted Lingerie (The Curious Collectibles #1) we have more of an understanding of his personality, and Misty’s impact on his life.

The novella is short, but packed with good stuff, its complete; leaving no loose ends, and has no cliff hanger. The introduction to characters and paranormal happenings makes moving into the full length book more enjoyable in my opinion.

All in all for a short read it’s a 4 star read for me.

The Bejeweled Bottle by Lana Hart, is the next book with themes and concepts from “The Curious Collectibles” series. The story starts in the village of Sanctum Harbor, home of Mrs. Clathermont’s Curious Collectables, but travels through time and space to lands and places of long ago.

I felt that this story was far different than the first two books, in that the story was very complex (the author must have done an awful lot of research), not quit as frilly & playful, and had a more serious tone. The romantic element was woven into the story with a slow build up (the reader knew it would happen), but was a backseat theme to the main plots. Cameo appearances by a few characters from books 1 & 2 help tie the overall story to the series.

I had a difficult time keeping all of the Egyptian character names, and their parts in the plot in my head, but that could just have been my issue and not the author’s delivery. I found both of the main characters, Nikki and Sefu to be like-able, and wanted them to be successful in their endeavor. I did feel that Nikki acted without thinking at times, I passed that off as a trait that just helped make her who she was.

This book could be read as a standalone, but to get the full scope of where the subplot (woven underneath each books main plot) may be going, reading the books in order would be a better idea.

I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. Although I enjoyed books 1 & 2 a bit more than this book, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, so I can see how Mrs Clathermont’s Collectables plays in the subplot which is slowing unfolding. I feel there is something dark and sinister looming on the horizon.

The cover art for this book and the cover revisions to the two previous books is awesome, I would love to have prints to hang on the wall, they are colorful, and emotive.

For me this was a three star read.
