I've only read about 75 pages but really am enjoying this book. The writing is very compelling and cliche-free.

The author includes many interesting anecdotes about actors, directors, producers, and others involved with the five films discussed.

This biography, unlike so many I have read, mostly kept the pages turning as well as a good novel. Much of that has to do with the subject, a complicated person who never stopped working for long, and whose work was mostly very good. He certainly had faults, and his struggles with those add to the books interest. In addition, the book provides a terrific revisitation of the worlds of theater and the movies from mid-20th century into the 21rst century. Why not five stars? At times the pace lags a bit, especially later in the book. And the name dropping gets a bit much, even if that's probably more a function of Nichols than of the author.… (plus d'informations)

Five major directors make documentaries on WW2. It changed their lives psychologically. Especially George Stevens. William Wyler loss of hearing and John Houston more angry at everything.

One of the most fascinating non-fiction books I've ever read. If you're a cinephile, you can't not read this book. Likewise if you're interested in the cultural changes of the 1960s, it's a sure thing. Harris blends rigorous scholarship, great first hand interviews (inciteful quotes from Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman in particular) with the narrative drive of a novel.
