Hanley is a favourite writer of mine. His story-telling never flags and his subject matter exudes personal experience and often deals with people operating in extremis.
This is the second volume in "The Furys Chronicle". The family, all now adult, is all but disintegrated. Their indebtedness is the driver of this story.
Hanley draws on his own traditional Catholic life growing up in Liverpool. The novel is set in 1912. I recommend James Hanley as a great Twentieth-Century novelist.

These stories are stupendous. To quote John Cowper Powys," I have never read anything in fiction that brings the abominable suffering that goes on all the time among the exploited of the earth so savagely and unsparingly home".

Spell-binding, lyrical, bardic tale of a lost tramp in rural Wales. Welsh phrasing that made me imagine that Ray Henwood was reading it aloud. There is an authoritative touch to the presentation of Welsh communal values, their speech and the sense that each character is a fully formed individual.
James Hanley, one of the greats.

This book was originally published as " The House in the Valley"in 1951 under a pseudonym, Patrick Shone. James Hanley has written an excellent, moving novel with Against the Stream. It shows the highly subtle narrative skills that are Hanley's trademark. The story is of a small boy whose father has suddenly died and the effect of his sudden arrival at the disintegrating country manor of his reclusive relatives.
Hanley is particularly good at giving voice to the emotional trials of those who stand outside the security of the post-war industrial world, in this case 1950's England.… (plus d'informations)
