The plot isn't anywhere near complex, and the backgrounds of the characters are sketched out in broad, simple strokes, but that only makes the tale more entertaining. What's more, the real focus of the narrative is interaction between the characters, with the crime merely serving as a vehicle for people interacting. This is one of the most charming books I have ever read. If you can find a used copy somewhere, get it. Spinsterish Scot takes a holiday in France and finds danger, diamond smuggling and true love in unexpected places. Great fun and smart writing.
