Cywizard | 9 autres critiques | Apr 9, 2024 | Very interesting book. Not at all what I was expecting after reading the title, and I like that. Now, the idea behind the book (logically) can be seen as a bit sad. However, if we don't look at it logically, it's a bit different.
Mary and John have been married for a few years. They have a baby and live together. Unfortunately, they have both started to become a bit miserable with each other and they both think that the other person does not put effort anymore. From a reader's perspective, I sympathized with both. I felt sorry for Mary because she wasn't getting attention anymore. She is in charge of all the household chores and the baby, making dinner and making sure her husband is happy. On the other hand, John is upset that Mary doesn't make an effort with her appearance.
What upset me the most was how John cast her aside the second he could. But, I was so happy that Mary was in a better place. (Granted the procedure to get accustomed to her new lifestyle took me a second to accept. I'm happy they addressed it well in the book though).
There is so much to say about this book. But I do not want to delve too much into it without spoiling it. The book is on the shorter side, so easy to finish. However, since it is short, the development between the characters isn't as in-depth as it could be.
Overall, this is a good book. It highlights topics in marriage that some might not feel comfortable talking about. I think one can learn quite a bit from this book.… (plus d'informations)

Snowboyz | 9 autres critiques | Apr 9, 2024 | Mary and John are married with a baby son, Adam. However, the spark has gone out of their marriage, and John seems unhappy with Mary-she has gained weight, she is always tired, she has to take care of the baby, etc. Then Michael enters, and he sees Mary, and is reminded of his dead wife, Nicola. His staff captures John and Mary, and Michael offers John money to divorce his wife and never see her or Adam again. John sees money and freedom, and agrees. He then goes on a wild adventure, with many women and spending the money. Michael drugs Mary so she doesn't remember John. People recognized that Mary is not Nicola. Michael tries to get Mary to fall in love with him.
Good concept/idea, needs better execution and a good editor.… (plus d'informations)

rmarcin | 9 autres critiques | Mar 20, 2024 | This story has a very wild concept (a man sells his wife and child to the rich) with a pretty dark undertone. The first few chapters of this show how helpless the victims of human trafficking can be. I couldn't help but hurt for Mary as she watched the man she loved sign the papers selling her away. Gutu did a great job capturing this without focusing so much on it that it takes away from the book overall.
This story starts by sharing the conflict from the start: the weed of poor communication creeping its way into the cracks of a marriage. John's fear of having candid conversations breeds resentment and makes him feel as helpless as Mary. The story also highlights the evolving nature of relationships and how it is hard work to avoid complacency.
As if on cue, Michael swoops in and takes advantage (albeit not directly intentionally) of the failing marriage as Mary looks a lot like his late wife.… (plus d'informations)

When I read this book, I had the same feeling.
Mary is having an unhappy married life with an unfaithful husband and a two-year-old son; on the contrary, Michael, who lost his wife in an accident, still couldn't come to peace with his situation. Bith the characters are unhappy bit with different reasons. The story takes an interesting turn when they get to meet each other without knowing that their lives will be a roller coaster after this. Michael pleads to help Mary gain her life and happiness back and starts working on the plan. This makes him feel content after a long time.
What happens next and how that happens would add different flavors to the plot and make it more interesting.
As a reader, I liked the read and definitely can suggest it to someone who likes reading classic tales of married life. The writing style is engaging and, at the same time, maintains a moderate pace.… (plus d'informations)
