Herbert ("Herb") Gundell (1920-1989) was born in Fuerth, Germany and raised in Switzerland. After briefly serving in the Swiss Army, he came to the United States in 1939. In 1942, Gundell joined the 87th Regiment, Company L (United States Army 10th Mountain Division). He trained at Camp Hale, Colorado and served two tours of combat duty in the Aleutian Islands. Gundell's service ended in 1945 and he became a United States citizen in 1949.
