I enjoyed the first book in this series when I read it a year ago and have been looking forward to the next one ever since. It did not disappoint! I got the same comfortable feeling reading this book as I did the first, but some elements were different here.

While there was still very much a home front feel, Olive had more work to do for the war, so much of her time was spent with her fellow FANYs rather than with the townspeople. The mystery here seemed to have bigger stakes than the one in the first book, and I appreciated that. I loved Harriet, Jonathon, and Hen in the first book and was happy with there part in this one. As for the new character, Max, I really hope he's a part of the next book too.

Olive's relationship with Jamie was more complicated this time, and sometimes she acted too impulsively. Still, the same kind heart and faith in others was there.

And for a second time, I was surprised to be so caught up in the fate of the pigeons. I love that aspect of this series.

Looking forward to number three!

Thank you to NetGalley and to Kensington books for the early read.

I don't think I knew this book would be a murder mystery when I ordered it because I was mostly looking for more books taking place during World War II. I didn't mind the mystery, but I would have liked to know more about the outcome of the pigeons' missions. Also, since we have a limited third person narrative-Olive being in every scene-I think the book would have also worked well in the first person from Olive's point of view.

I really did love this book! It was honestly the perfect pick me up after what has been a really challenging year. I really enjoy village life dramas and murder mysteries and this was a really good combination of both. My husband and I enjoyed reading this out loud to one another. I will say though that there were times when the narrative got a bit distracted, I think there were just one to many things going on. Like perhaps the village play could have gotten less air time than it did for example, It didn't really add a tone to the story and just served as a distraction, same as the pig club. There were times where I felt the author was just tacking on too many things and the main plot lines were getting lost. I do wish also that there was more focus spent on solving the mystery of Miss Hustlbee's murder, it felt very back and forth on that. One minute Olive would be focused on that and the other times she would say she wasn't and would be on to other things.
Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would be interested in seeing more from Stephanie Graves in this style.

Great Book
I haven’t completely finished this book yet because I have been really busy lately, but so far this book is pretty great. I love the characters and the story and literally everything. It was a little slow at first but most books are like that for me and it quickly got better and that’s what matters.
This is the first historical fiction book I’ve read in a long long time and let me say that I was not disappointed by this book. It makes me want to read more! Stephanie Graves did an amazing job writing this book and getting the period right. World War II is one of my favorite time periods to read and reading from this perspective was pretty interesting. I loved the carrier pigeons and the murder mystery too. At first J didn’t know how it was going to go, trying to balance all the very different aspects of this story but in the end it turned out pretty good. While a little boring at times, this book was pretty great overall.… (plus d'informations)
