I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

Pretty standard fare, the young girl (on her own in the world) falls for the handsome, compassionate athlete. The thing that set this book apart is the Christian flavor. I use that word intentionally because it's just a taste and not at all overwhelming. It didn't scare me away while still making it's point. This is not a genre I usually read but I found it a passably entertaining read.

This is an edge of your seat kind of story! Here is a woman named Rachelle; she is a talk show host who has no family but those she works with at the radio station. Rachelle gets fan mail and some of it really scares the living daylights out of her, but she tries really hard not to let fear control her life since losing her parents and brother years earlier.
Yet, in a moment when Rachelle least expects it she is viciously attacked though rescued by a pro hockey player named Ed before the attacker could complete his goal. Rachelle’s injuries are bad and her nightmares seem so real, but are they all nightmares? Ed believes that because he has saved her he is now responsible for her safety.
One of the many stories Rachelle pursues brings her face to face with a doctor who is helping women have babies whose IQs are exceptionally high and boy are they talented. At first, it seems to Rachelle that it is all amazing work this doctor is doing, and she hopes her attacker will no longer follow her around, stalking or calling her. Rachelle could never have been more wrong in her life.
On top of all this, her friendship with Ed may be morphing into a romance, but both have pasts that put them in a quandary. Ed’s father has a temper and Ed does too, which is seen by many when he is on the ice. When he meets Rachelle, his heart is deeply moved. Ed wants to become a different man because of what he sees in Rachelle, but she is afraid that Ed is just like another boyfriend she once knew.
At times, when I was reading, my nerves felt on edge as I could almost feel Rachelle’s fear. Her determination not to let her life be dictated by fear eventually becomes a reality as she learns to lean upon God again and open her heart to His love. As she learns to trust God and see how He works in her life, she opens her heart to risk loving Ed and spending a lifetime with him. Read the book to see how it works out along with what other people in the story were dealing with and if they decided to hand over their lives into the hands of God!

I love mail order bride stories! I am certain many of them did not turn out well, it still is somewhat of a romantic concept. People actually fell in love through the mail as some do now through the internet. They sometimes actually fall in love with the person and not just the image. Some of the strongest marriages I know were first built on their friendship before they fell in love. Sometimes, as it is now, it was simply to get away from an unhappy home or situation. I am sure many of those were not as happy. Anyway,....

'The Substitute Bride' is a mail order bride story with a different twist. Before she could arrive on the train, it was derailed. Some were killed, some injured and most all were in a state of confusion and shock . They did the best to survive until help came. Rebecca was no exception. She was hauled into a wagon and taken to the next town of the train stop. Her husband to be was worried and anxious awaiting the train that never arrived. Finally a telegram was sent that the passengers would be arriving by wagon and would be put up in the hotel for a week, if needed, at the expense of the railroad. Shortly thereafter, Jared heard the sound of wagon wheels and anxiously waited for the wagons to be unloaded. There was only one young, blond hair, blue eyed woman. He knew it was her! She was beautiful! He anxiously approached her and introduced himself....This is not the reception he expected!

Rebecca was confused and frightened. How could she marry this stranger? Where would she go? What could she do? She was sure she was a disappointment to Jared. She had to make a decision soon. She only had two more days to stay at the hotel. What were her choices?

Second thoughts about mail order romances plagued both individuals. A steady flow of events continued to take place. Would this marriage have a chance of lasting? Would it even be a real marriage?

The cover depicts the story quite well. The characters a developed well. The descriptiveness of background scenes and events were fairly well done , allowing the reader to create the picture in his/her mind.

The only thing that dissuades me from giving this book a five stars rating in this review is I feel it dragged out a little too much. I began to feel "Alright, already! Enough!" It still was a very good tale. I therefore give it a Four and a Half Stars rating.

The author generously sent this book to me for an honest review, of which I have given.

This story hit the mark as a sweet and enjoyable romantic Christmas story. I liked how the "Polar Bear Plunge" is what brought the two characters together. It was one of those books you just need to curl up on the couch and begin reading until you reach the end. Have a blanket beside you, because the water is cold and there is snow and ice on the ground and you will want to "bundle up"!

Aleni is a well loved nurse who has a young son Ty, a great mother-in-law, Megan and a heart that can't get over her husband being killed in Afghanistan. Brice is a handsome, well known new author who just wrote a book about his tour of duty and escape in Iraq. When he ends up in the emergency room and Aleni is his nurse things just keep happening to keep them together. I loved how everything worked together, from Brice and his dogs, to Aleni returning a Christmas tree. It was fun, fast paced and truly a story I will read again. It was good, even to the last line by Ty in the book. Christmas is almost here, so I encourage you, if you want to to be uplifted, have fun and truly enjoy a romantic story, get the book and begin to read.
