This quaint book from the early 1900s is set in the period of the English Civil War, whilst no year is provided in the book, the war lasted from 1642-1649 under Charles I so we know it's roughly somewhere in these years.

Whilst the novel is set in the landscape of the conflict between the Roundheads/Puritans and the Royalists/Cavaliers the actual conflict per se is not what this novel is about.

This novel, which is directed towards the youth market, is about the adventures of a young man Richard (Dick) Chester. Adventures of which I can't really address without ruining the story line but nonetheless despite being a relatively simplistic plot you do end up feeling for the poor lad as he falls victim to deception.

At 208 pages of relatively small text it's not a long story, but it nonetheless is quite consuming and set in a period which isn't addressed a lot in fiction.
