A propos de l'auteur

Newt Gingrich was born on June 17, 1943 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was brought up in the transient household of a military family and survived the Hungarian Uprising as a boy. His Baptist faith also helped mold his conservative philosophies. He received a Bachelor's degree from Emory afficher plus University and Master's and Doctorate in Modern European History from Tulane University. Before his election to Congress, he taught history and environmental studies at West Georgia College for eight years. First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, he rose to the position of Speaker when the Republicans gained control of Congress in 1995. A staunch conservative, he gained nationwide recognition with the successful Contract with America, but his political career suffered a setback when his admission of violating House ethics rules resulted in a reprimand from the House and a fine of $300,000. He has written over 20 fiction and non-fiction books including Days of Infamy, To Try Men's Souls, Valley Forge, Window of Opportunity: A Blueprint for the Future, To Renew America, To Save America: Stopping Obama's Secular-Socialist Machine, and Trump's America: The Truth about Our Nation's Great Comeback. He was honored as Time magazine's Man of the Year in 1995. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins

Reason read: war room challenge, US war of independence
This was the second book I read about the war of independence and the two books meshed well. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The reader did a good job and the story was engaging. This covers the build up of a Patriot troops that could actually win a battle.

This was a book that explored four main facets of American's War for Independence: 1) Washington Crossing the Delaware 2) Thomas Paine's contributions 3) Brutal conditions suffered by American Troops 4) Hessian involvement. If you are wanting blow by blow battle scenes, this book is not for you. There are few battles. The book focuses more on the conditions under which America's troops labored; and they were brutal, more so than I had realized. I was leery of reading this book because I had to read some of the author's position papers for a class I took, and I was not a fan! That being said, this book is top notch, IMHO. 345 pages… (plus d'informations)

I've only read a few historical novels, but this one did a great job of bringing you into the horrors and miracle of Valley Forge. As a student of the American Revolution, there wasn't much I learned, but I felt the authors did a fantastic job of illustrating the plight of the American soldier during those frigid months in 1778. They did an equally great job describing the march to Monmouth during a heat wave (estimated temps around 105) where many a soldier, both American and British, were dropping like flies due to heat exhaustion.

I didn't realize "Valley Forge" was book 2 of a trilogy. I will go back and read books 1 and 3 given the quality of the prose and research of this one.
