Courte biographie
A clergyman, author and, as the Oxford Companion to Gardens puts it, 'the true pioneer of the picturesque'. He learned drawing from his father and toured Britain in search of Picturesque Scenery. This was described and illustrated in his books. He published Observations on various parts of Britain and an influential book of Remarks on Forest Scenery (1791). His nephew, William Sawrey Gilpin worked as a garden designer.

Critiques

Recent large projects by Ellen Harvey have been focused on cliches of traditional art production, in particular the picturesque landscape, in projects such as Observations Concerning the Picturesque,[17] a commission for S.M.A.K., the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, Belgium in 2009 for which she created a guide to the Citadelpark surrounding the museum, purportedly by William Gilpin,[18] along with a fake archive of his chronologically impossible visit and tours of the park.
