Clear Lake Pomo Society par Edward Winslowd Gifford
By 1919 the number of aboriginal natives living in California were very few, and Gifford worked to get a census and description Cignom and neighboring villages at Clear Lake. This is a limited edition paper bound publication from the University of California Press. Very nice addition to an ethnological library.
Gifford was a giant at UC Berkeley from the late 19th well into the early 20th century, spanning ornithology, zoology, anthropology. This volume examines the vanishing tribal folklore of the California Indian, showing again Gifford painstaking effort to document vanishing culture and species in California. A very nice volume and must have for the Classic Science library.
Gifford was arguably California's foremost zoologist at UC Berkeley and California in general during the late 19th through early 20th centuries. In this rebound volume VIII, Expedition of the California Academy of Sciences to the Galapagos Islands 1905-1906, Gifford and academy fellows sailed for 17 months on the schooner "Academy", making 10 stops along the way. Gifford presents not only photos and descriptions of birds, but compares them to similar species in California, and he has numerous tables showing his painstaking effort to document quantitatively.… (plus d'informations)
One of the pioneering works on the Cahuilla, and part of Gifford and other anthropologists' attempts to understand the dynamics of Southwestern influence on Native California society. This work will be of interest mostly to the specialist interested in kinship, though there are a few myths and legends recorded here for the first time. The material on the Ute-Aztecan groups -- the Cahuilla, Cupeno, and Luiseno -- has essentially been superseded by William Duncan Strong's Aboriginal Society in Southern California (1929).… (plus d'informations)
