James George Frazer was a British social anthropologist, folklorist, and classical scholar who taught for most of his life at Trinity College, Cambridge. Greatly influenced by Edward Burnett Tylor's Primitive Culture, published in 1871, he wrote The Golden Bough (1890), a massive reconstruction of afficher plus the whole of human thought and custom through the successive stages of magic, religion, and science.The Golden Bough is regarded by many today as a much-loved but antiquated relic, but, by making anthropological data and knowledge academically respectable, Frazer made modern comparative anthropology possible. The golden bough : the roots of religion and folklore par James George Frazer
The classic work on the meaning of myths and legends.
The first serious book to examine the history of religion. One thread that runs through the book is Frazer's knack of identifying similar stories and themes from different religions. Many of the bible stories are matched in other Indo-European religions, and sometimes from even remoter ones. It deserves 5 stars for being the first of its kind, for the depth and breadth of the research, and in this edition for the superb illustrations.
To be fair, some of his propositions and theories have since been disputed of disproved. Which is to be expected for he stimulated considerable follow-up research. However the overall picture is still valid.… (plus d'informations)

It's important to note that the abridged version of this book, aside from being abridged, omits Frazer's most groundbreaking and controversial (at the time) thesis, regarding Christianity's relationship to the rest of humankind's myriad religions.
