Franklin, Carolyn. Ocean Life. New York, NY: Children's, 2008. Print.

“Ocean Life”, by accomplished author and illustrator, Carolyn Franklin, is appropriate for the ages of about 6 to 9. This book is a fantastic introduction to some of the creatures that live in and near the ocean. Several of the topics in the book are to do with coral reefs, fish, mammals, birds and food chains. The content is both sufficient and accurate. “Ocean Life” also contains a series of “True or False” questions on most of the pages, which will undoubtedly keep children interested. (The answers to these are provided at the back of the book).

All of the information in “Ocean Life” is set out in a clear and logical format and the font is quite large. In addition to this it contains a contents, glossary and index.

Franklin’s illustrations are stunning, as they’re true to life, therefore they’re extremely detailed. They also match what the text is describing well. A couple of the pages are actually made out of acetate, which really suits the whole ocean feel. Children will love this feature, as when they turn the pages, it reveals what is hiding behind the rocks and coral. The illustrations are also clearly labeled.

World of Wonder Rain Forest Animals” by Carolyn Franklin is a non-fiction children’s storybook about the rainforest. The book contains information about the animals, plant life and insects of the rainforest. Interesting facts about unique animals are given. The importance of the rainforest is shown as well. Acetate pages that are transparent attract young readers and True or False questions given throughout the book keep young readers interested. A table of contents shows the book’s organization. The grouping of animals into land animals, bird and aquatic organisms is helpful in understanding the concepts at hand. The names of all animals shown in the book are given next to the picture of the animal in a slanted way.

Overall, the book was well written as it was easily understandable for young children and it shows readers how valuable the rainforest truly is. I like this book and young readers will like it as well. They will like the colourful illustrations that reinforce the text. Information was presented in an attention-grabbing way that interested the reader. It was an excellent, informing book that is an excellent resource for young readers.
