[from University of Oxford website]
Gavin is a Professor of Hindu Studies and Comparative Religion in the Theology and Religion Faculty and academic director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies. Gavin read Religious Studies and Social Anthropology at Lancaster University and taught at the universities of Wales (Lampeter) and Stirling before coming to Oxford. He was elected to membership of the British Academy in 2014.

His research interests are in medieval Hindu texts (especially from the traditions of Shiva), comparative religion, and phenomenology. Developing from the comparative interests of these books, he is currently working on a project on holiness as well as developing closer textual work on a Sanskrit text called the Netra Tantra. He is general series editor of the Oxford History of Hinduism.

A comprehensive, clearly written introduction that makes the subject accessible to undergraduates.

This is a very comprehensive study of hinduism. A lot of historical depth to hinduism in general, but with so many branches of hinduism, still just an introduction to each of them. This is an academic study and while it is full of information, may be a little dry. Looks like a college text for a 300-500 level class. But for info, it beats any of the hinduism for dummies books hands down. Introduces all aspects of hinduism from the vedas to the tantras. From the distant past to modern times.

The best book about Tantrik cosmology. Very expensive, but worth every penny.
