"EROS : PATTERN : FATHER" is PLACE 39 & "forms the whole remaining of PLACE Book II." Other parts of this series will be reviewed elsewhere here: see "STANE", "HOOKS", & "UNPOLISHED MIRRORS". Are these places separate maps? puzzle pieces? This one is "to Kirby Malone, april 1976". The section specifically for Kirby begins:

"We exhale death for trees to breathe
a glucose factory in Battersea;
the Bride's reservoir of love-gasoline
lubricates the combustion shunt."

So it seems we have a little ecology here mixed w/ Marcel Duchamp.

The 1st of these "Kessingland Studies" is printed in 4 colors. All the landscapes are stark, gestural. I enjoy these folio publications: loose pages to be taken out & studied individually. The poem, "AS FAST AS POSSIBLE : II" was given to mail artist Opal L. Nations. It, too, seems to be a landscape, but not as gestural as the prints.

"Upwards cloud whirling downwards into sea swirls up
upwards accumulating note clusters whirlpointing meet
the upper half unfolding a flower that rimes with
and matches the sea"

Reading this is, for me, like reading Marcel Duchamp's notes for making the Large Glass: a detailed attempt to make sense of the world thru the writer's idiosyncratic organizing. This is the largest of the PLACE bks I have. The 1st 5 of "TWENTY-FIVE MEMORY JARS":

"Objects left from a party.
An orchid and a postage stamp.
Billiard chalks dissolving.
A root and a china pig.
Pencil sharpener inside a model duck
with a coil of wool discarded from knitting."

"BANDA includes fragments from Olivier Messiaen's notes to his work on birds." That's good enuf for me. The "JUG & BOTTLE XIII" aquatint is reminiscent of the work of Juan Gris.

"4 a. m. the Hedge Sparrow, shriek of the Hoopoe,
the Song Thrush on trumpet,
a large ball rolls by
hits the sentry box
and the road opens."
