Niall Ferguson was born April 18, 1964, in Glasgow. He is a Scottish historian. He specializes in financial and economic history as well as the history of empire. He is the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University and the William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at afficher plus Harvard Business School. Toute bulle finit par éclater. Les vendeurs à la baisse surpassent les acheteurs à la hausse. L'avidité vire à la peur. Niall Fergusson, l'un des plus grands historiens britanniques actuels, professeur à Harvard et à Oxford, ne tire pas ces trois enseignements de la seule crise qui a frappé l'Occident à l'été 2008, mais de l'étude des phénomènes financiers depuis Babylone, en passant par celle de la banque à la Renaissance et du marché obligataire pendant la guerre de Sept Ans. De cette vision au long cours, Ferguson tire quelques leçons. Un événement inclassable bouscule toujours les modèles les plus sophistiqués. L'instabilité des marchés tient au caractère bipolaire des individus, passant de l'euphorie à l'abattement. La finance est darwinienne, les crises sélectionnant les meilleurs (banques ou pays). Sûrement l'un des livres d'histoire les plus stimulants de ces dernières années.
