The story follows Riony looking after her adopted sister, Lyrrin. Along the way, Riony finds an abandoned baby hybrid and Lyrrin goes missing. Riony encounters friends and foes while searching for Lyrrin. The chapters switch between characters, showing readers both sides of the narrative, but predominantly follow Riony's perspective. This is an adventure-based story with a glossary at the end.

This book wasn't terrible. The main character wasn't particularly interesting. She was just a completely boring person, who was the sum of her actions and really nothing else. There is also the fact that the blurb and the beginning of the book make it seem like this is a superhero book. Like some alternate Universe where there were superheroes. But after like the first page, heroes become purely metaphorical. as in "Heroes are good people who help others, even if they have no powers".

Other than that, the book was quite well written, with a (pretty) engaging plot, and at least one likable character (Which was Dean, my favorite)… (plus d'informations)

Clever fantasy, but there were some confusing moments.

I was happily surprised when I began this book to find that there were illustrations throughout the story and they added a good amount of detail to the plot that I really enjoyed. The world the author created was wonderful and fantastical, with faeries and dragons and all of the wonders that you would expect to find in such a magical place. However all that being said, I found the plot line, during the beginning of the book, to be very confusing and jumbled. The characters are interesting and their story is also something I felt I could get into, but the jumping through various characters was off-putting.I guess I never got into it as much as I could have.

I love books about this type of lore, so maybe I am burnt out by them. The author makes a good attempt at trying to pull the reader -- characters, whimsy, conflict and it is all there but I just was not enthralled.

3.5 Stars
